Areas of Practice: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Disability

Pursuing Full Benefits From All Available Sources

Supplemental Security Income exists to provide federal disability benefits to people who are not entitled to maximum disability benefits from SSD but who are able to demonstrate financial need. Under SSI, you can get full benefits for a disability that prevents you from working a job, regardless of your past Social Security contributions.

However, in order to be eligible for SSI, you must demonstrate that your total income is below a certain amount.

SSD and SSI benefits can be combined. I have many clients who only qualify for partial SSD benefits because they have only ever worked part-time, low-wage jobs. If these people have low enough income, they can make up the difference with SSI benefits. The legal standards for disability status are exactly the same in the two programs.
