More People apply for benefits as disability program nears bankruptcy
Lancaster Eagle Gazette - July 21, 2013

Carol Seubert Marx, a Lancaster attorney who handles workers’ compensation and disability cases, said if benefits were processed quicker, it might save money down the road. In Ohio, it takes about 372 days to receive compensation; the national average is 368 days

Marx said a client in his 30's suffered a shoulder injury on the job, but was denied workers’ compensation. He applied for Social Security Disability Insurance, which took two and a half years to process.

The damage, which could have been easily fixed at the time, is now permanent, Marx said. If not for the delays, he would have been back to work and contributing, she said.

“It’s really a vicious cycle of lack of care,” Marx said.
